Curridabat is a suburban municipality with renewed interest in transitioning into a more pedestrian oriented town experience. The Central Market is the retail component of a much larger and complex development. The weather in this area allows for no HVAC year round and an otherwise open environment other than appropriate shelter for the heavy rainy season. The retail, mostly food and beverage boutique venues, fosters outdoor market style gathering sheltered from the seasonal rain. Further phases will include high density residential, sports and entertainment venues as well as spaces for supermarkets, pop-up markets, parks, and recreational areas.
Scope of Work
The design team was tasked with creating an exciting and inviting atmosphere at the Central Market. The use of natural light, combined with the strategic placement of lighting and the use of color, reveals the most striking elements of the market's nighttime experience, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere that encourages shoppers to explore the market and stay for longer periods of time. Additionally, the use of color-changing LED lighting adds a sense of excitement and movement to the space, making it a unique and memorable shopping experience that can be customized to support a multitude of different events, holidays and themes. This dynamic and visually engaging atmosphere has made the Central Market a destination that customers want to revisit time and time again.
The scope of work goes included developing the concept design, preparing construction documents, conducting photometric and power density calculations, managing the contract administration, and commissioning the final product. The effort planning and testing options and effects and the attention to detail ensured that the final product met expectations and created the inviting atmosphere that encourages customers to linger.
