Scope of Work

Visibility, directing focus, emotion, composition, theme reinforcement, revelation of form and punctuation are among the many objectives in theatrical lighting design. Lighting, even when it seems simple, draws us into the scenes before us. It creates that “complexity” that immerses us in the story, highlights the unexpected, and signals change. Designing for a Cirque production is, in many ways, like a dance performance but with two unique conditions. First, you are working within three dimensional stage space. This means preparing to illuminate performers anywhere within the complete volume of the performance space. This volume includes from the floor to the overhead grid and from the rear of the stage to above the audience. The second unique factor is managing the exponentially higher level of visual safety requirements of performers who are doing incredible and dangerous feats. Managing this criteria along with the demands of story telling complexity and visual effects within different venues and with changing acts commands a lighting design that is flexible, organized and visually powerful.
